Welcome!

I’m Johnny Grenda, a published photographer & Music journalist from York

If there’s one thing I’m passionate about it’s photography. Even before moving into weddings and concerts all my spare time was spent exploring landscapes. Heading out with my camera, backpack and tripod across the such beautiful places as the Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District.

Composing interesting images from the natural scenery was always my goal. You’d think capturing the beauty of a beautiful scene would be easy. Right!?! It’s there for the taking. However, even with our phone cameras we can quickly realise it can be difficult to translate the way our eyes are seeing it, into photo form. There is definitely an art to creating genuinely interesting images, and from landscape photography I really learnt how to capture the scene in a way that best represents what it was like to actually be there.

Take that skill and apply it to people-based images. Only now instead of the scene being the main focus, it’s now just the background to our human subjects. Environmental portraits and even candids. Obviously some scenes are easier to work with than others, but the awareness and thought process remain. Constant visual multitasking to craft the perfect images from front to back.

Why am I taking about this? Well.. basically I want you to know that I take enormous pride in my work, right down to the finest details. Every project gets my absolute A-game. I’ve explored many fields of photography now. Landscape, Weddings, Live Music, Architecture and even Drones. I believe the more you explore the different aspects of photography, the more well versed you are in the overall art.

What is your favourite area of photography?

It used to be Landscape, but now I have to say I prefer to photograph events. The joyous atmosphere can be very infectious, and the fact I’m constantly having to adjust to the ever changing situation means I’m always kept on my toes throughout.

What is your typical approach when photographing a wedding?

My main approach to a wedding is to capture natural/candid style shots in the most uniquely composed way I can at a moment of peak interest. Those kind of shots for me can often tell the story best and greatly display the overall feel of the day. That’s not to say I won’t work in posed shots too. Individuals or group. I’m always happy to work in whatever your preferences are. When it comes to editing the photos themselves I offer a choice of two uniquely different styles. ‘Showtime’ and ‘Daydream’. For Weddings I use ‘Daydream’ as the default look (as seen of my Wedding portfolio), but you are welcome to choose whatever will suit your special day best.

What do you enjoy most about Wedding Photography?
Experiencing and capturing someones special day, moment by moment. That feeling when you catch something special that you know they’re going to love when they get to see the images. Those candids where they’re not even thinking about the camera. They’re just lost in the days magic. That’s what makes it such a fulfilling experience for me.

What has been your favourite venue to photograph live music in?

I’ve been fortunate to work in venues such as Manchester Albert Hall and Leeds First Direct Arena, but I’d say my favourite has to be The York Barbican. Visiting the arena many times as a child, it was a great feeling to be able to work in my cities biggest arena for the very first time. I won’t ever forget that.

If you could photograph anyone in the world who would it be?

Erykah Badu and Rihanna. Hopefully that chance will come one day when they are touring again.

What part of photography do you find most challenging?

I’d probably say concert photography. The low light setting in itself is very challenging and when there are lights they’re often inconsistently coloured. Unlike with dance floor photography you’re not able to use flashes either. However, conquering such unpredictable circumstances has prepared me for pretty much anything an event may throw my way.
